Buddhism tradition says there are 108 emotions (‘kleshars’). The number comes from multiplying three feelings (pleasant, unpleasant, neutral), six senses (5 senses and mind), three times (past, present, future), and two attachment types (attached, unattached). Many of these emotions can bind to one’s life, causing sickness. How can one be freed from the effects of emotions? The chapter 52 of The Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu, talks about the beginning and eternity, and with the same breath, the mind troubled by desires (control) and judgments (guilt) are freed. Time stops when one finds peace.
“…If you close your mind in judgments
and traffic with desires,
your heart will be troubled.
If you keep your mind from judging
and aren’t led by the senses,
your heart will find peace. …”
